A photograph of a person is used as a starting point for a sculpture to be made from a single block of wood. Working with hand tools—knives, chisels, and saws—I carve the figure, often leaving the original corners of the block untouched to contrast with the modeled shapes. I paint the wood while carving, later casting select pieces in bronze.
Do not be fooled—this is never a sculptural illustration of a camera's image. It is an artistic response to the world: a gardener holding the tomatoes he's grown, a laborer carrying a heavy load, a poet or composer, a Parisian gendarme standing guard. My sculptures build on a lineage of great shape—makers whose core is composition, including Titian, Cézanne, Matisse, de Kooning, and Knox Martin—as well as global traditions such as Asian, African, and Greek sculpture.
Look at the Archaic Greek Kouros at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's there! Art!
Infused with this lineage, my vocation is to create fresh, vital sculpture using wood, paint, and bronze.
Stephen Geoffrey is an artist primarily making sculpture. He received a diploma from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA and later studied at The Arts Students League in New York City, NY.
